It's a different animal and it's called "zając".

Whether people are able to distinguish them is a different matter ;)

They differ thus:

  • A hare has the longer ears, is generally larger than a rabbit, lives in a field in a 'nest' (sett), and won't (can't?) disappear down a rabbit hole.

  • Rabbits, highly sociable animals, live with the extended family in underground warrens, and come out (mostly) at night only.

Wikipedia is often excellent for this kind of thing...
