There's a Japanese language learning RPG on Steam

I subscribed just to tell you guys this because I think this will help a lot of people on here that are learning Japanese. If you go on Steam there is a game called "Learn Japanese to Survive: Hiragana Battle!". They also have a Katakana version that you can buy separately. I don't think there's a Kanji version, though. But yeah, basically it's an RPG with the story of "an evil person is trying to take over the world and you must learn Japanese in order to defeat him". Random enemy encounters are different characters and as you learn new characters the game tells you to write it down, it helps you with pronunciation, etc...I don't know too much about it because I haven't played it yet, but apparently it actually teaches you. The reviews are very positive and it has a 9/10 score. It's supposed to teach you "the basics" (that's what it says), but some of the reviews said that it teaches you more than you would think. Again, I haven't played it yet so I don't know, but I bought it (it's only 7 bucks) and I'm going to try it out, having ZERO Japanese experience. If you're trying to learn Japanese on Duolingo, this looks like a great supplement to go along with that. If I end up enjoying this game a lot, I may consider actually trying to learn the language. I didn't have an interest in learning Japanese, but the whole concept of this game really pulled me in. I feel like there should be a lanuage learning RPG for all languages, that's so awesome.

So yeah I just wanted to let you guys know that this game exists if you want to check it out.

Ooh, nice! It seems like a more modern looking JRPG version of the slightly dated classic Slime Forest Adventure — a basic RPG style Japanese learning game which has been around on PC for over ten years now that teaches recognition of hiragana + katakana + 1,945 jōyō kanji.

Although this game looks cool, it seems like it might a be a rather slow paced way of learning hiragana. However, this style may be easier for people who have absolutely zero Japanese experience to get along with. ^^

It would be awesome in some ways if SFA could do what this game has done in terms of graphics and artwork and then getting itself onto Steam, where hopefully it would get more the kind of recognition it deserves rather than being an obscure game few have heard of...

It seems to be an incredible game.

I bought the game for 0.79 during Summer Sale and it was better than I expected it to be. But you could also just spend about 10$ for a Hiragana and Katakana book, which taught me all the Hiragana characters in just 3 hours.

I hear you, but you get a fun game out of it as well. Also I think you'd be able to commit them to memory more easily from the game since it's reinforced so much more in battles as opposed to studying out of a book.

I took a semester and a half of Japanese in college and barely remember any katakana or hiragana so I think unless you have an excellent visual or muscle memory you're gonna need more than 3 hours and a book.

Thanks a lot for the recommendation, man! I'm a huge fan of RPG's and I've been itching to try Japanese for a while. I'll definitely give this game a shot over the weekend.

Also, if you have a Nintendo Switch, there is this game

It's called hiragana pixel party. This one is pretty simple. It's a rhythm game that teaches you the hiragana. It's plays like a game of Simon.

I thought about getting this, but I'm pretty familiar with the hiragana. This will be great for anyone who starting out!

The kanji version is out, and it's living up to expectations!
Gameplay similar to Katakana War, but with upgradable buildings.
