Why is "large" not excepted?

'Large' tree would be weird to use in English. 'Tall' is the verb that suits this statement the most.

As a native English speaker and landscaper, I disagree. Describing a tree as large is a very common English phrase, e.g. That is a large tree. Large is not the same as tall. Big and large are more similar.
