Infinitive question!

I'm confused by how a verb is used sometimes. For example, "je peux manger maintenant," or "I can eat now," why is it manger instead of mange?

You say in english "I want to eat" "I am able to eat" "I love to eat"" I know how to eat..." we say, in french "Je veux manger", "je peux manger", "je sais manger",

There are some differences and some similarities, we have to learn them...

In this case " to eat " is the 2nd verb , so the infinitive is used(manger). If the sentence was " I eat...... ", then it would be " je mange" .

In the examples Pierre gave , you'll see the first verb is conjugated. But the 2nd verb (manger) is left in the infinitive.
