Note: 공격 攻撃 literally is "attack", though 수 手 implies 선수 選手, so this is just a sports word.

forward or striker should be good

Any relation to 공 meaning ball here?

Can this be used for any sports game, or is this exclusively for soccer only?

Why is the answer "forward"?

"Forward" is a better answer than "attacker." I've never heard that in my life. Forwards are the people who usually stay on the other team's side of the field/court/ice.

What about "offensive player" (counterpart to 수비수 as defensive player)? That seems the most generic translation. A hitter in volleyball, a forward in soccer, and a batter in baseball are all offensive players, but none of the other English words proposed seem to be applicable to all of those things. But offensive player is not accepted.

That's true. We say forward.
