Course Suggestion: Sinhala
Hello, I am from Sri Lanka and it's only a month ago that I stumbled upon duolingo and i have loved every moment of learning my course! So after seeing Tamil and Hindi appear in the duolingo incubator I would like to suggest Sinhala as a language. My main reason is that currently, despite there being many speakers it's a dwindling language and most of the future generation here speaks English. Also, Sinhala has very unique archaic grammatical and spoken features which aren't present in other languages of the Indian subcontinent. There is lack of knowledge about Sinhala in the international community and the remaining knowledge is also very limited. I just want to know what the thoughts of you guys will be about this? I would love my mothertongue to get some coverage around the world as well as give the knowledge of it to the people around the world.
You can apply to be a contributor, though Duolingo usually abandons these requests and Duolingo doesn't meet the potential it could have.
Support! Sinhalese writing is utterly insane and beautiful. I would love to see it on Duolingo. (How would they teach writing though? XD)
Also, to those linking to articles on How to Suggest a Course or downvoting for the same reason, stop. Sinhala is NOT in the language suggestion list meaning this user is not doing anything wrong.
The guide still applies - they should follow the bit in the guide about asking to get this listed.
I have no idea how they contact the mods though (no stream, WIU locked, and no notifications anyway)
It's a problem, for sure.
I will be very glad when staff get some communication tools developed and released.
Has anyone heard anything back from this? My girlfriend is Sri Lankan and, whilst there are a couple of okay resources ('lazy but smart sinhala' being my favourite), there is nothing which is as thorough and systematic as a Duolingo course. I would love to learn Sinhala in my spare time, so if anyone knows of any other resources in the meantime, please post on here? Much appreciated!
I would love to see Sinhala (Sinhalese? I'm not sure, are they interchangeable?) on the list! I help people to understand the Bible and there is one man I speak with in English but I wish I could help him in his native language, though he also knows Tamil, which IS on the list. But he prefers the former. I posted this today because I didn't know this thread existed and I got a little bit of hate over it. Such silly responses. Anyway, I hope they add Sinhala!
I have been trying to find a place to learn Sinhala for an upcoming trip to Sri Lanka and I would love to be able to do that through Duolingo I enjoy how easy it is to learn and would love to be able to learn Sinhala through Duolingo!
I'm definitely willing to support this. I'm a native Sinhala speaker and would like to provide my time to assist in the creation of the course. I did make an application in the incubator a few years back but didn't get a response. My offer still stands.
Please do if you can! I've tried to use books to learn sinhala since it's impossible to learn from the internet but duolingo is really the best way I learn
If you're fluent in Sinhala and English, you could go ahead and apply. Although I've heard it's quite demanding. I'd love to see the language on here and would certainly follow it.
I have been learning sinhala through some sri Lankan friends...Iove it but would love a duolingo course that went beyond the basics...
I would definitely add it to my Duolingo portfolio as I have a lot of friends who speak Sinhala. I learnt it for a while many years ago and still remember quite a few phrases.
A friend of mine is from Sri Lanka. He also knows English, but I want to learn his language too. When I talk to him on facebook I see many things written in his language and wish I understood what it says.
This is so true its so unfair to not include it! pls add it alot of people would love it
I have given my first lingot, ooohh, to the initiator of the post, RuwinduGun. Here here!! Please introduce Sinhala Duolingo. This site is excellent!!
