So... Duo has a surprise for us next week?

According to the official Twitter:

https://twitter.com/duolingo/status/921042264482287622

I’m guessing that “tones of fun” is not a spelling mistake. Could we be getting Chinese already?

That moment when you don't even plan on learning Chinese, but you're still overhyped about this post.

!!!!!!! Chances are "tones of fun" refers to Chinese. Perhaps they're going to open it to alpha testers who applied ??? It's been a while since I applied and I haven't heard anything since.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Pecil1

Yeah probably..or an official release date

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/OmegaGmaster

Apparently it opened for alpha testers. I didn't get a confirmation email... :'(

Edit: I just did. Hurrah!

Nothing here :( RIP.

Edit: nvm, in!

    OH YEAH!\( ̄▽ ̄)/

Are you really learning like 21 languages?! Take a lingot.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Katred2

Thanks. I’m trying to learn that many... little by little.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/stuffradio

You should just write a sentence using one word from each language.

''I’m guessing that “tones of fun” is not a spelling mistake. Could we be getting Chinese already?''

    Oh my gosh, please yes!

    I can't wait. Thanks Katred2!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Woof.

Look at my profile if you think I'm exaggerating.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Katred2

I get the feeling you might be looking forward to this... :-D

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Woof.

    You do? That's weird. ;)

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/stuffradio

You might be exaggerating, but we'll never know!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MarquiseDeBat

Bots for Android would be great and a lot of fun for a big portion of the users. However, I rather think its going to be some language release.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/isnottogive

I agree that bots for Android would be excellent too tbh!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/piguy3

There was an announcement very similar to that for Japanese. The surprise was... Japanese had been added to the incubator weeks previously but they randomly decided to try to make a PR event out of it weeks later.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/isnottogive

It deffo has to be chinese.

Though part of me was hoping that the surprise would be High Valyrian and Czech in the app, chinese is more likely (and also amazing tbh!)

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Woof.

Actually, I think Czech and High Valyrian in the app would be more likely, but it wouldn't be as exciting as Mandarin <3

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/isnottogive

That I have to agree with! (And it would be the second time I break my rule of only 14 languages after I added portuguese. Because I would so add it without a thought)

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Woof.

I don't even try to have a similar rule: I would definitely break it.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Lemniscatarum

Though Mandarin would probably be available on iOS first, as for following the pattern of Korean and Japanese.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Rhabarberbarbara

Korean was available on iOS and android at the same time. And Chinese might appear on web at the same time, now that the character challenges were adapted for web.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/zyxwvutsrqpo

They said the beta would be android too

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Woof.

Probably. The Chinese course has new stuff and I'm not sure if Staff has the code written for them on the web...

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/NeonMoogle

For the fact of the inclusion of a "winking face" emoji, I'm guessing that "tones" is a reference to Chinese.

So, hey, if we have Japanese and Korean on web now, I wonder if that means Chinese will release on web as well (instead of mobile only at first)?

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Usagiboy7

Woo, thanks Katred2 for the heads up! xD

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BoricuaSJS

I didn't even plan on learning Chinese but I'm so hyped anyway!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Woof.

That's exactly what happened to me with Czech! I was not planning on learning it but when I saw a post saying that it was going to be released in beta in a couple minutes, man, you should've seen my reaction. And of course, now I'm learning it :)

Maybe it's not Chinese; maybe they will retrofit the new tone learning system already developed for Chinese to the other available language that needs it: Vietnamese!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/CarlosLM.

That would be a great step ahead for Duolingo!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Speir_

Thanks for the notice, Katred2! ;D

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ThorusCrusius

Would be awesome! But last time when I accidently discovered Chinese (browsing aroung on mobile and incognito mode, about 2-3 nights ago) it was at stage 25% and not accesible.

Anyway, hope you're right and the wonder happens!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Kansokusha

It's possible. I remember Japanese was 69% the day before it was released on mobile.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ThorusCrusius

As you mentioned it: Yes, it came unexpected quickly. Same with Korean. Can't wait

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/OmegaGmaster

99% of the time, the incubator meter is garbage. Look at the Czech course for example.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Woof.

99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of the time. The Hindi course is also a prime example.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/isnottogive

Oh Hindi... One day we shall have that course too. In the meanwhile I shall look wistfully at the incubator and sigh XD

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/OmegaGmaster

Oh yes, how could I forget?? XD

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Maughanster_

Crossing my fingers for Chinese! I hope it will be released on the web and app when it is released!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Woof.

Wait… WHAT IF IT'S LABS ON MOBILE?????????????????????

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/xaghtaersis

Probably Mandarin yeah, Mandarin for 2018 for me then!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/CarlosLM.

Klingon is long overdue, so IMO this language might be the surprise. Regarding Mandarin Chinese, there are people still waiting for a response to be alpha tester, so I highly doubt that it will enter the beta phase soon.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Woof.

Oh, good point. There is no release date for Klingon...

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/OrcasNeedViolins

Cheers!!! It's 36% done(Chinese)! Thanks for the heads up Katred2!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Woof.

The WIU says it's 50% done.
