ひらがな は「平仮名」と書いて、「平」の平にした漢字=簡略化したものです。

カタカナ は「片仮名」と書いて、漢字の字体の一部 (=片)をくずしたものです。

Translation :

Hiragana (written in kanji as 仮名) means the character is made by softening the appearance of kanji. That is why the kanji 平 (that means flat) is used in its name.
Katakana (written in kanji as 仮名) means the character is made by taking a small portion (a fragment) from a kanji and using it as it is, which is why the kanji 片 (that means fragment) is used in its name.
