What are your reasons for studying High Valyrian?

I'm curious, all you out there who are studying High Valyrian, what's your motivation? Hard core fans of GoT? Love conlangs? Impulse? You've already worked through every other Duolingo skill tree?

For me, while I have worked on a few languages on Duolingo before, I have never tried learning a conlang. I figured it would be fun to give it a shot and see how it differs from a "real" language. (So far, it seems easier, with more straight forward rules that don't vary and smaller vocabulary that maps exactly to English.)

Also, I have a bunch of friends who are hardcore fans of the show. So, learning some High Valyrian is a joke/form of one-upmanship for me.

For me it is mostly just curiosity, I like learning languages and want to see how constructed ones compare to natural ones and whether or not I can master them in the same way. I would really like one day to be able to communicate confidently in a language like High Valyrian or Klingon.

I am learning it, because very few people are learning it. As far as I know, I am the second Duolinguist to reach level 15!

My twin sister is a nerd and since Klingon still it not on the board we're doing High Valyrian for the fun of it!

dont say nerd, say fan.

I like GoT, and I'm interested in conlangs.

I'm on board because I do it for fun

I love learning languages and High Valyrian was so different and unique from any language I’ve heard of. I had to learn it!

I like the orthography, and it seems like one of the more fleshed out fantasy conlangs.

I didn't intend learning it. I just took a peek out of curiosity, but I've now done lessons for four days in a row.

Sadly, like the Japanese I learned as a teenager (pre-internet), if I don't get to speak it with other HVers, it'll end up just falling out of my head.

Maybe I could record an album in HV..........

I've never watched Game of Thrones, I'm just learning it because I like conlangs

Saying that learning conlangs is a waste effectively implies that reading fiction is a waste, since they are both constructed from imagination.

Just because something is made up doesn't demean it's purpose. Where has fiction brought us?
