This sentence hits different when you realise that you are the one sitting under the counter.....
Trash is very commonly used as a synonym for trashcan. So, "The trash is under the counter" should be accepted.
Oh... I thought for a second that 조리대 was a counter for the amount of kitchens like the counters for animals, flowers, books, etc.
