  5. Balkan Slav Languages?

Balkan Slav Languages?

While I know that the Duolingo team is working hard on Chinese, Japanese, and Hindi; I think you should add Serbian, Croatian, or Bulgarian, though particularly Serbian because it is mutually intelligible with Bosnian, Croatian, Macedonian, and to a smaller degree Bulgarian.

What do you think about Balkan Slavic languages being introduced onto the site?

I think we don't need to start another Yugoslav war because "why did you make Serbian and not glorious Croatian, Croatian is best language" -"You Croatian fools need to learn to use the Cyrillic alphabet" -"I'm Bosnian and I'm offended that you called it Serbian even though it's mutually intelligible with Bosnian and Bosnia is better than Serbia" -"NO SERBIA GREATTST COUNTREY" -"Why not call it Serbo-Croat-Bosnian?" -"WHY DOES SERBIA GET TO BE BEFORE GLORIOUS CROATIA" -"DO NOT TAINT THE SERBIAN LANGUAGE BY MIXING IT IN WITH BOSNIAN"

etc. etc.

This is pretty much what I envision happening no matter what name you decide to give the course.

They could call it "Slavic" and manage to p. off more people still :-)

I'm old enough to remember when it was simply called Serbo-Croatian.

I don't think arguments like that (surrounding the name) would occur.

probably wouldn't; Just call it Serbo-Croatian and teach both.

In favour. Considering the Balkan relationship to each other it will most likely end up a complete shitshow, which means entertainment to me.

Undoubtedly there is some intelligibility between Macedonian and Serbian, but not to a comparable extent to that of Croatian or Bosnian. Sure, in Yugoslav times Macedonians were fully acquainted with the language originating just to their north, but that was bilingualism.

Yeah, the OP may have meant Montenegrin as the M in the BCMS. Macedonian would work as mutually intelligible with Bulgarian rather than with other ex-Yugoslav languages.

Hey! I love the idea of creating a course for Naš Jezik /Наш Језик (Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, and other dialects). According to the official rules (https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/15014194/GUIDE-I-would-like-a-new-course-What-should-I-do) , support for these languages has to happen through these three links (please comment on each & add lingots!):
