Streak Freeze Strike

I love Duolingo, it's an awesome site. But I've always wondered what the point of the Streak Freeze in the Lingot store is. Who are you kidding if you buy it? Call me old fashioned, but to me a streak is a streak. Three weeks ago I lost a 45 day streak after a night out (I've set myself a goal of reaching a 60 day streak within July), and I was so mad at myself afterwards. But I've never considered buying a streak freeze. Timed practice and Spanish certificate are so much better. What are your thoughts about this? Any other idealists out there?

¬°Btw, un buen fin de semana!

I don't really understand the obsession with the idea that other people are "cheating," which I've seen several times now (people racing through the tree, gathering XPs, using spellcheckers, etc.) It doesn't really matter what anyone else does, does it?

Some people motivate themselves by imitation. I have nothing against it as far as it's not the seek of glory and popularity, amoral and frantic.

I've had one for a while now, just in case 'something' happens, as does sometimes when one has work, kids and other things going on away rom one's language studies. I've never had to use it.. but it's there if 'something' happens.

And I don't think it compromises my idealism about how to get through the site. :)

So you can bank it so that you don't lose it? I thought you had to buy it the day you need it... Seemed kinda pointless.

I bought mine 198 days ago and just used it for the first time a few days back. Once you equip it, it goes into effect automatically if you miss a day. Also, yeah that would seem pointless. I would just go into timed practice and earn a point.

If you had to buy it the day you need it... why not simply do a practice in the time it takes to click the links?

You got a point Skutir, it doesn't matter what other people does. We're here for learning languages, not getting points, streaks or what have you. I don't consider it cheating. I just feel that the streak is one of the things that keeps me motivated to come back to the site every day, even on bad and busy days, since I know that doing a little bit of practice every day makes a big difference in the long run (and also the fact that losing the streak bugs me like hell...lol). So if I can just chose the easy option and buy myself an extra day, the streak loses the effect for me.

A couple of days back, I missed my first day since starting this streak. I was out of town practicing Spanish with a friend for the day. So, I didn't feel badly. The next day, I came back and answered 200 questions. So, I really dont' feel bad about using the streak freeze. Even if I hadn't studied at all, missing 1 day isn't going to undermine someone's studies. But, hopefully people will be responsible not to abuse the feature.

I don't like streak, or I would, if it was completed with the total days of connections. More accurate in my opinion. You lost your strike? But I can see "198 days.

Yes, but he said "I lost my streak two days ago". Not an English speakers, but I though the streak was lost.

@PERCE_NEIGE, my wording was imprecise. I meant that I missed a day. Thanks for asking for clarification. I will go change that in my post. ^_^

I got my streak freeze a while ago. My plan was to use it when I traveled to the United States, which can keep you away from the internet for 24 hours easy. In the end, I wound up using it because I completely forgot about Duolingo for a day. I have a bunch of other things going on in my life, I was exhausted, I took a nap, and when I woke up, I realized I hadn't done any Duolingo exercises in a while. Turns out, it had only been a whole day since the last time, but by that point the streak freeze had already been activated.

I guess you can consider it cheating. I call it, "A safeguard not to lose your hard work when life punches you in the face." :)

i see it different. sometimes you just cannot help being cut off the web for a few days (outdoor tracking / silent retreat / hospital / etc) and than it would be nice to be able to keep your score, to be able to continue as motivated after the forced break :)

i can imagine that losing a high streak score, without it being your fault, can be really demotivating...
