That is not correct English. I think you have the German structure in your mind  (Your name seems to be German): Hofftest du etwas hier zu lernen?

"Were you hoping that you would learn something here?" would also work on the English side. Does doufali jste support that, since the verb is imperfective? (If so, I will add it.)
