Can someone please tell me what purpose does "heen" serve in this sentence? Couldn't you just say "Loop niet achteruit over de brug!" ?

Yes, that would also be correct. Adding "heen" emphasizes that you're crossing the entire bridge, but in this case it can be safely left out.
