"Lay down" es como acuesta (le haces esto a otra cosa)

"Lie down" es como acostarse (lo haces tú mismo)

To lay (lay, laid, laid), transitivo - poner, colocar, etc.
To lie (lie, lay, lain), intransitivo - acostarse o estar acostado, etc,

Muchos hablantes nativos no comprenden la diferencia entre los dos.

Native speaker and I had to look this up.

"lay requires a direct object and lie does not. So you lie down on the sofa (no direct object), but you lay the book down on the table (the book is the direct object)."

I doubt even native speakers would correct mixing these two up.

If I said "I'm going to lay down on the sofa." That's an incorrect use but no one is going to notice or care. I only us lay in conversation and when writing. When in doubt just use lay.
