I frequently come across posts with questions related to reading, pronunciation of, and writing (mostly typing) in Japanese. In particular, I often see questions related to the dual reading (Onyomi-Kunyomi) system of Japanese kanji. So, I decided to create this post to collect in one place some information and tools for beginners to help them read, pronounce, and write in Japanese. The post will not cover vocabulary or grammar resources, because there is already an excellent series by oribaakki, and a collective resource post by Usagiboy7 to tackle those.

I will continue to update these resources whenever I find new ones, so if you are an experienced Japanese learner, I’d be happy if you share in the comments section any other open access resources that can be classified within this topic, and allow me to add your contribution to the main post.

Thank you.

Great, thanks! I mostly want to know how to master the high/low pitch of a word. It seems that most dictionaries (without audio) do not give any info about it.

Thank you for reminding me of this. Pitch is dialect (and therefore region) dependent, but if you come across any dictionary with audio (which will of course be synthesized), it is going to be in the standard dialect called Yamanote ben 山手弁. If it's of any use, I know that several kanji decks on Quizlet contain audio, and I'll add the one I studied to the main post (Later edit: I added one Japanese dictionary with audio to the main post, and will not include Quizlet cards, because they offer audio only in Onyomi, and only sometimes in Kunyomi).

Hi. I just found this Japanese Accent Database in an old folder of resources that I had collected in the past. I hope you find it useful.
