Wouldnt this more correctly (though not literally) translate to "why is the door (or the house's door) open?

See. Thats the problem with other languages. You cant directly translate things. In korean that makes more sense than translating from english to korean "why is the door open." In korean there would need be more information needed. So they just say 집.

Does anyone know if, "Why is the house unlocked?" was accepted?

It shouldn't be, as unlocked is a different adjective from open with its own word
