I use Lexilogios's multi-lingual keyboard. I type it on there then copy and paste it onto the text box. http://www.lexilogos.com/keyboard/hiragana.htm

Is there some advantage to using that site and having to copy-paste the text from there to here, rather than simply typing Japanese here directly the proper way? (Such as how it displays a nice list of hiragana and the romaji equivalents—some reason like that?)

In windows, you can simply add Japanese to your languages in settings (regional and languages). Then, you just type the English (Romaji) syllables and it turns it to either Hiragana, Katakana or Kanji by your choice.
Methods vary from different types of OS.
For Windows or Mac users:

Hope this helps, good luck in your Japanese studies! :D
There is Google IME for that purpose if you are using Windows: https://www.google.co.jp/intl/ja/ime/
There are similar IME for Linux and it comes built-in in different flavors, but I am no help here, better google it if you're using Linux
Can't say for Mac, never had one.
I have a Mac, and you can go to system preferences and then, I believe it was in keyboard settings or something. I just checked that I wanted the Japanese keyboard, and while I was there, I added the German one too ;-) It now sits along the top of my screen and I just click on it to adjust which keyboard I want.
Then again, I noticed that I haven't had to use it for quite a while. Either I inadvertently clicked on the "word bank" button, or they did away with it because too many people had trouble with it. I'm wondering... but I sure didn't miss it.
