Or, a bit more literally, it can be interpreted as "We do not have what to eat." It's just one of those things that doesn't transfer exactly from one language to the other.

I guess "co" corresponds to "something". Verbally: "we have not something to eat."

how about 'we don't have anything to eat' ? although co~anything is not a direct translation, it is what the phrase is most similar and most commonly used in English
