Frustrated in Hungarian

Hungarian study will not let me past 3rd Lesson in Phrases. Apparently there is NO way the answer in the multiple choice “Oda Menni” is correct even though after it says you’re wrong it shows that answer to be correct in the red screen. I enjoy this format, just wish I could continue. I tried the other two answers and it wrongs them also, therefore no answer is accepted, bummer. Steve

Yes, "oda menni" is not correct Hungarian, so it should not be accepted. In the same lesson, the sentence "Igen, oda menj!" appears, and the translation they want you to write is "Yes, go over there." "Yes, go over there" does not translate to "Igen, oda menj"; "Igen, oda menj" is not correct Hungarian, I mean, I could probably make up a very specific, artifical scenario in which it could potentially make sense, but this also indicates that this sentence should not be used in the FIRST lesson of a Hungarian course.

In short: the Duo Hungarian course is AWFUL, and I very much hope it never gets out of Beta. It doesn't deserve to.

"Oda menni" and "Igen, oda menj" are both correct Hungarian, in some contexts. e.g., Igen, oda menj, nem ide! See http://www.e-nyelv.hu/2013-11-10/odamegy/
I do agree with you that this should not be introduced so early in the course, though.

I wrote you a mini-essay in response but it disappeared. :/ I don't have the time to write it up again, so I hope this is not too short, but:

1., "Igen, oda menj, nem ide!" - Yes, I did say I could probably make up a situation where this fits. The problem with the sentence you provided is that it NEEDS the second part added, or it needs adequate context to let you know what's omitted -- neither is the case here, unfortunately.

2., I see, so yes, it's correct Hungarian when it's understood as a verb + a determinant. Because "odamegy" and "oda megy" are not equivalents, if one is accepted, the other shouldn't be, so I immediately thought they wrote "oda menni" incorrectly (lots of natives have problems with preverbs, after all).

Basically: to understand the difference, you need to have a lot of knowledge about grammar already. That's obviously not the case here.

Clearly this whole 'odamegy' thing is a complicated issue, and this is from a first or second skill, I think. Only "odamegy" should be marked as correct in MCQs, and "oda megy" should not be given as an alternative, as it is very advanced and it does more harm than good to even show it at this point.

It shouldn't be like this. Duo should give you a solid foundation, and this course is not doing that. :/

I know this is very distressing to non-native speakers :-) , but both "odamenni" and "oda menni" ARE correct, I think. They mean different things.

In most cases, "odamenni” refers to the direction or goal of where you are going. Odamenni = to go to/towards something that is away from the person. In this case, "oda" is an "igekötő". An "igekötő" is always connected to the verb as one word (odamenni, odatenni, odavinni, odatolni, etc)

In "oda menni", "oda” refers to a concrete place already mentioned or known in context. For example, "I have never been to Budapest, but I'd like to go there" = "Soha nem voltam Budapesten, de szeretnék oda menni". So "oda" in this case acts as a demonstrative pronoun (I think...). It refers to a concrete place (Budapest) and is used to replace it in the sentence : "Soha nem voltam Budapesten, de szeretnék Budapestre menni" . Oda menni = to go there

The verb „menni” refers only to the activity of going, without specifying direction, goal, etc.

Hope this helps.

Maybe you omitted the 'to'. I mean the perfect expression for 'oda menni' is 'to go there'. I tried that five minutes ago and DL accepted it (of course). Try that you too.

Presuming they both come up, select "Oda menni" and "Odamenni". Sometimes a multiple choice requires more than 1 answer to be selected.

Yes, but it shouldn't require you to select a plain wrong answer though...

What I do to move forward is write the wrong answer which is expected and then remember to note what the correct answer should be. Remember that it is in beta and there are errors. Sometimes you can note the errors. Sometimes you get a message that it has already been reported so then unless I am wrong the only option is to do what I am doing.

I just started learning Hungarian as well. The course does not seem to be set up as well as the Spanish course. For one thing, it seems to me the "Basics" module should have come before "Phrases," which you are forced to learn first. Also, there is no option to slow down the audio and some of the words are not pronounced at all when they are first introduced. I'm hoping this course will improve.

:D I love how both of us are so encouraging... To be honest, I think this course is actually quite a good way of immersing yourself in Hungarian culture, especially in the environment us Hungarian schoolchildren experienced... "You will learn this VERY HARD language, no we can't make the course simpler or explain things more thoroughly, you must suffer and be left alone with your questions, yes do input a wrong answer to progress, what do you mean you don't want to learn outdated words, yes the only way to learn this VERY COMPLICATED language is by constructing long-winded sentences, yes we were inconsistent when we put down the correct translations, but can you not GUESS what we wanted?"
