Could the translation also be "I have a chip?" In all the restaurants I know in Romania, "cartofi prajiti" = chips (standard English - French fries - in USA)

I guess so. Potatoes are rather big and if you refer to one potato it can only be baked or boiled. To have it fried you must cut it in "chips" and then you say "am cartofi prăjiți", it is very uncommon to say that you have one chip but it is not grammatically incorrect
