Why is "there is a cow in the road" not accepted?

I have the same question. "Op" has been translated literally: as a native English speaker I would never say "there is a cow on the road", it would indeed be "there is a cow IN the road".

"There is a cow on the way" marked wrong... Should it be?? Also, this sounds like the cow is "in the way" but that is apparently also wrong. How would you say "in the way" then??

A cow in the way = 'Er staat een koe in de weg!'
