PLEASE HELP! My streak collapsed before my eyes:( UNFAIR! Why?

Hello guys, hope you feel better than me. Last night I had my worst nightmare. The thing is i wasn't sleeping! I lost my 600-day-streak, for which I had worked since high school. The reason I am posting this, is because I need help. I'm pretty sure I had bought a streak freeze. I always do. And I was only one day away (34 mins to be precise). So I think there must have been a mistake. Now I keep getting this donating message and I can't really afford 14 pounds right now:( So what do I do? Do I contact the staff? How?

PS: I know, I know it's just a number and matters what you've learnt but we all know that, that number is also a motivator. Each time I would enter the app, I would see a 3-digit number representing my hard work and I would decide to add another day to it. But now I look at that cold fire and honestly I feel unaccomplished. Almost 2 years became nothing in an hour....

Thanks for your help in advance :(

If you are doing it very close to midnight it is likely that there wasn't time for the server to connect with your account and it registered that it was done later (the next day) therefore it was registered that you missed a day.

https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/articles/204762234-Why-did-I-lose-my-streak-

This article by the staff explains that most people actually missed a day before and never realised so the streak freeze was used up then and there wasn't actually one protecting you when you missed this day.

I have seen a lot of situations like this and it is very unlike that the staff will help because there are just too many people who lose streaks and complain and to go through and check each of those would take up way to much time.

Good luck on your new streak :)

Yes, this is quite likely the explanation.

Back when I had a 500+ day streak, there were MANY times when I was not aware of having used a streak freeze, but happened to go check the lingot store and found it had been deployed to cover a miss without me being aware of it (likely by a connection issue close to midnight as mentioned). Then I would top it up again and remain covered. But all it takes is not knowing it had been used and missing a connection again for the streak to be ended.

It is a shame DL has poor connectivity and no real ability to work offline, but that seems to be the way it is.

This is not the explanation. I have tested this thoroughly and come to the conclusion there is a glitch which is causing lost streaks for no apparent reason. Just today, I was given an achievement badge for a short streak - and then poof, the streak was gone! I know that I have completed my daily goal not once, but TWICE each day for the past three days - and using my laptop and then doing it again on iPad. Still, (1) achievement badge! (2) [4 seconds later] poof, streak is gone!

I have reported the problem to support. They seem disinclined to fix this. It is NOT the result of human error (mine), time zones, etc etc - this streak loss thing is real. And annoying.

Hi,

sorry to hear about your streak lost.

What plattform had you check for the streak repair? IOS (because of popup message)?

Try the "lingot store" in the DuoLingo Android app in parallel to IOS, e.g with an Android emulator software like Bluestacks, NOX, VMWare Prices might vary, acording to plattform or streak length.

It could have been ~+- 11-12EUR, what I have seen last for a 3xx streak on Android.

Can't you ask a friend or family remember to pay that money?
Have you checked Paypal credit or master card revolving credits, so maybe you can pay a month later?

As you have not started any new XP and not a new 1+ streak thankfully, you can still repair the streak, which might be IMHO your only chance.
I have seen other users the last 1-2 weeks, where the eligable option was set to FALSE, once the "days_ago" field reached 4 or 5 days!!

So, hurry up!! You are running out of time!

So what do I do? Do I contact the staff? How?

What makes you thinking that any staff member would put his work by side, invest time, check logs and eventually comes to the conclusion to restore your streak (which you have not bought for)?

How unrealistic is your wish? Think about it.

Somewhere in a thread there was written down that staff does NOT help anymore getting back a streak, even they may have done this sometimes before.
Plz don't ask me which thread(s).....

The DuoLingo company introduced the "streak repair" feature for IOS and Android mobile apps as a new business (test) model.
DuoLingo needs money for their business.

Either you use that feature, or you lose your streak.
Punkte. Ende.

It’s on iOS but I tried with my friend’s Android and there was no option. I’m only saying this because I am 100% sure I had bought the streak freezer. I always check. And in my XP graph, there is only one white day. And as you said there is a user who has restored a lot of streaks for the users who had lost their streak due to bugs and server issues. The name is bchan. You can see his profile with this username. This means that I could be right, can’t I? But I cannot contact anybody through activity section anymore. That’s why I asked. Are you one of the staff? Meaning no offence but the way you put it made you seem like a marketing executive!!! I said I cannot invest such a money. If only it was more reasonable, I would have considered it. Right now it’s too much for an Iranian like me who uses Iranian currency. You could do quite a lot with this money in Iran! Otherwise I would even donate to the app that has taught me much. To be honest, I told my dad about this and he said what do you wanna buy again?? I said a number! And he said without this number, do you have to start your lessons over? I said no and a moment later, we were showing each other poker faces. Anyways, I would classify Duolingo as an app with In-App-Purchases, Not free anymore with all the Plus thing going on. (You’re probably gonna justify it like “they need money.” I can agree to that. I’m just saying this is against their slogan which can be seen all over the website. As I said I’m pretty sure I had it :( That’s why I couldn’t resist to post sth. They could have got 2000 Lingots or make the streak like half or sth. That would have been more fair!!! Streak counter doesn’t matter on profile. I’ll start again. But with no similar dedication or “stress” as one user once called it. That’s not good for the owl, is it? I wish there was a non-money-based way. But at the end of the day, money is the talker. Thanks for your time though.

As I wrote it was mentioned in a thread, that this was at a time BEFORE the mobile app "repair streak" feature.

It’s on iOS but I tried with my friend’s Android and there was no option.

IOS: Popup message on app start / login (what I have read so far).

Android: No popup message, additional "repair" item in the DuoLingo app lingot store (only).

I understand but I mean this shows that Duolingo is not errorless!

There was a user who wrote a Python user script which could interprete that above stream data.

You would need to convert the XP counters to a timestamp and add all values for a specific timezone each day (each single practice exercise has it's own XP record, so you need to add them all for each day). The script can show if you might have not reached your coach goal (e.g 10XP, 50XP) a single day in the past 7 days.
To need to do it manually however is crazy and more timeconsuming...

Maybe he joins - sorry I can not remember his name.

That would be great. I am in the acceptance stage now as you can see from my full profile name. Every streak has an end. You can’t cope up with this app for life. People have lives! I am so disappointed with DL. Cause from what I saw in 2 users who were my friends, they stopped completely a week or two after their streak lost. That’s not the case for me. But every streak ends one day. Just saying...

But I cannot contact anybody through activity section anymore. That’s why I asked.

Help / submit bug report: http://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

But you might only be able to submit a reliable report if you can choose ("Purchase issue" for streak repair, e.g it did not work and you have a order id).

I do really NOT expect that "Other bug" is legitimate for your personal streak issue.

Are you one of the staff? Meaning no offence but the way you put it made you seem like a marketing executive!!!

No, I am not a DuoLingo staff; otherwise I would have loved to try to help you by tracing your profile / manually check servers logs with the proper tools.

I am also not involved with any marketing (usually marketing are the "bad guys", and we (the admins/devs) have to meet their goals, often within a ridiculous, not quite realistic time frame (therefore often many bugs relate just from this case)).

In this case "marketing" even made the decision to add a repair option (so good, and this feature saved me once, so thanks!!).
In other companies quite often this departement just cuts (limits) software functionality to support e.g firmware on multiple RC model flight transmitters, which is always (almost) the same software, but modified / limited for the TX models in case of individual money ranges.

But I regularly read threads and follow the past < 300 days how it goes here....

I am an IT / (Java) developer and JEE middleware backend specialist with many years of experience.....not affiliated with IOS, Android (basically it's a form of Java) or Scala programming....not yet.

Did you know from http://making.duolingo.com that the new DuoLingo web portal is based on Scala (rewrite)?

I feel for you. I recently broke 600 days and like you say it matters more what we've learned, but it is something I've become somewhat religious about.

I try to at least do the bare minimum as early as possible if I feel I might not have time or energy to do it later - or even just forget. One weird thing I noticed was last week it registered a couple of days at ZERO experience and I really don't remember doing a streak freeze or anything. I think I just did the most basic Spanish lesson available.

Those two days weren't days I planned to not do duolingo, but if I had the energy to login and freeze my streak I would have had the energy to at least do the easiest lesson possible.

Maybe they noticed and decided that was too lazy of me so it shouldn't count. There I was relearning what I obviously already know while other skills deteriorated. I really don't know, but fortunately I maintained my streak.

Buena suerte!
