Can anyone break this down for me?

Vous pensez qu'il y en a pour encore pour combien de temps de maintenance ? What is the accurate translation of this sentence? Why is there an "en" in it ?

"il y en a" is an idiomatic expression that is equivalent to "there is/are"... Good luck with the rest of the homework!!

you think there is how much longer for maintenance time i think.

I think a better English translation would be 'how much longer do you think the maintenance will take?'
En is in this sentence because it represents 'it', it being whatever the subject of the sentence is so here the maintenance time.

Even if this is for homework or something, the sentence is just badly written. As far as I can tell, "pour encore pour combien de temps" is grammatically incorrect in the first place. If the English translation is "how much longer do you think the maintenance will take," here are two much better and natural ways to state that:

  1. Vous pensez que la maintenance va durer combien de temps de plus ?

  2. Vous pensez que la maintenance durera encore combien de temps ?

Actually, "Vous pensez qu'il y en a encore pour combien de temps de maintenance ?" is definitely something I would say naturally (as long as you get rid of one of two "pour", both would be right, but two "pour" is definitely wrong).

On the other hand, I would probably never write it. But it's always the big problem with French, the language we speak is very often not the one we write.
