new home page layout (English to French)

What do folk think of the new layout of the skills and strength bars that has appeared over the last couple of days.

I don't like it and wonder why it was needed. The feature I don't like are that it is spaced out too much, meaning that not so much fits on the screen. If I make the magnification smaller to fit more on the writing becomes very small, and it still looks very spaced out.

Any comments from others?

Having said this, perhaps there was a good reason to do it that outweighs this. Maybe we could learn about it?

There do seem to be more important things to change in DL than this layout, unless there was a very good reason to do it.

Thanks to those who are trying to improve the site.

Yes, multiple threads have been started on the UI strength changes 1-2 days ago.

See my workaround solution described here (thread is probably deleted, gives me 404 error now): https://www.duolingo.com/comment/25224659

Lesson user style: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/24634938/Lessons-Userstyle-to-get-some-things-of-the-old-look-back

The workaround is the installation of the user script "DuoLingo trim tree" and usage of the same whitelist hack duo.old_web_url_whitelist=["^.+"]; which you would use for the "progress quiz" (in the lingot store).

Am afraid I don't understand any of this. My programming skills are zero. While I do think I could learn to understand these things, there are only just so many hours in the day. French, the gym, walking, church, reading and a myriad of other things amply fill my time.

It really is pretty simple, once you stepped into :-)

Woof, Lica, FieryCat have described in multiple threads step-by-step how to successfully use the whitelist workaround (1, 2, 3.....click here and there, enter this, reply that, etc.).

To install Greasemonkey/Tampermonkey plugins for Firefox or Chrome browser is also quite easy. The vendor homepages may tell more in an install guide or readme.
To install the "DuoLingo tree trim" JS user script is even easier. It is just a click on a raw JS file and auto-installs (you just click OK).

The wiki http://duolingo.wikia.com/wiki/Duolingo_Wiki already described the basic stuff about the two plugins and user scripts.

Feel free to ask if you still struggle to find the soft boosting way to get started or contact me on HelloLingo ;)
To explain everything in great detail may take much longer than actually installing / doing it directly...
