Simplified or Traditional?

I've only been doing one lesson of the Chinese course so I feel as if I should probably have more experience, but what the heck!

So as we presumably know "Chinese" itself isn't a language— in the related groups of Chinese languages, the most spoken is Mandarin, which is what the Duolingo course is on. But then, I realized that there were two ways of writing Mandarin! The simplified writing system and the traditional writing system. (An example of this would be in Simplified Writing, the word for love would be "爱" (ai) but in Traditional it would be "愛" (still 'ai').

I was just wondering what type of writing system Duolingo was using in their Chinese course, and which writing system should be known when visiting China or using more colloquial Chinese.
