Is that the same thing in traditional characters?

    I don't understand the difference between older brother and brother or older sister and sister.

    For us westerners the emphasis on older/younger made me think if there is any generic brother/sister or brothers/sisters in Chinese. I found the following page:

    https://chinese.stackexchange.com/questions/22079/how-are-ambiguous-brother-and-sister-typically-translated-into-chinese

    Quoting from the summary post on that page:

    Can be used to refer single / multiple siblings:

    older brother(s) = 哥哥
    younger brother(s) = 弟弟
    older sister(s) = 姐姐
    younger sister(s) = 妹妹

    Seldom used to refer to a single sibling:

    brothers = 兄弟
    sisters = 姐妹
    brothers & sisters = 兄弟姐妹

    It looks like Chinese family is very complicated:

    they accept brother, but really it means older or younger

    In chinese, korean and japanese language, there are different terms for older/younger brother/sister

    Or it could be。我的哥哥是个学生.

    It should translate to 我的哥哥是一位學生, a student should be translated to 一位學生.

      我希望Duolingo將來會使用該句子。

      How does this sentence indicate that the brother is older? I read it as "My brother is a student".

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/tolunayo

      There is not exactly a generic brother in Chinese. It is either older brother or younger brother. They have different words for each. See my post above:

        What is wrong with that?

        You should take some risk and try something different also: 我的哥哥是一个学生。
