For those who are not so much into Chinese pop culture, it would be a good idea to start with Chinese folk songs. The shorter verses and simple feelings would be less intimidating for an average learner.

蔡琴 is one of the most famous female singers from Taiwan, recognized by her soothing, mellow voice. Go for

03 茉莉花 Jasmine, a southeastern folk song featured in 2000 Beijing Olympics;

05 在那遙遠的地方 In that far-off place, a love song originated from 新疆 in the northwestern. Imagine this song sung by a nomad in the tranquility of deserts.

09 彎彎的月亮 The curvy moon, is not exactly a folk song but a modern song in the 80's created in the style of a folk song. A song about longing for home.

Some good choices in there! I'm looking for any songs in Chinese other than romantic songs. Anyone have any decent recommendations for me? Jay.

Throwback to what was practically China's anthem in 2008: Beijing Huanying Ni https://youtu.be/Xj8R7bEGK4w

Here's another one that's not exactly romantic, and sounds a lot like some American pop: JJ Lin - Twilight https://youtu.be/gd38-X3HpbM

Cheers!

I tend to gravitate towards Taiwanese artists like 周杰伦 or 五月天.
