What is wrong with “It’s already taken hours.”? It’s virtually a literal translation, and and a common one in English.

I'm assuming the "už" is telling us it HAS lasted - one of those instances where Czech present is used to indicate an action at least partly in the past? But surely better English would be "It has lasted for hours already"?

Yes, and "It has lasted for hours already" is among the accepted answers. Even "It has been lasting..."
