Hungarian vs. Romanian

Hello everyone! Welcome back our next challenge of the Versus Series is Hungarian vs. Romanian!!!

In case you are unfamiliar with this challenge here is the discussion were we talked about it and the other competitions are here as well: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/25125242

We are going to put each language to challenge each other in 3 categories. 1. How it sounds (spoken) 2. How is sings (sung) 3. How it looks (written)

Now, what you have to do is vote! Choose who's your winner in this round. DON'T FORGET: we would like you to write in great detail why you chose the language you voted for. Let's start!

Hungarian -

  1. Spoken: https://youtu.be/cy8Hj477EL4
  2. Sung: https://youtu.be/cBOmcnHMJ3E

My vote goes to MAGYAR! :)

[Edit: Ooops! I accidentally uploaded the wrong image. This one should be easier to see. :) ]

I KNEW there was a version of that comic featuring Hungary. Could you provide an HD version pls??? :]

I edited the comment. The image should be easier to see now. :)

Köszönöm szépen!

100% Romanian!!! Although, I may be biased because Romanian is one of my all time favorite languages. All in all, it still sounds so beautiful! :)

Edit: Another reason I vote for Romanian is because of it's diacritics. For example, did you know that "ț" is the only found in the Romanian writing system. Which what makes Romanian more unique in my opinion.

P.S. I would like to share this video, since it relates to this discussion. This video is a Language Challenge between a Hungarian and a Romanian: https://youtu.be/0g20KAi0edc

Thanks for sharing the link to the video, Justin7171!

My pleasure, I'm glad you liked the video!! :D

Just wondering, which language do you vote for?

That was a really fun video, thanks!

OMG! I did not expect that from Romanian!!

When I listened to the language being spoken, for some reason it sounded like Spanish and then when I listed to the song it sounded like Italian!?!?! Looking at the written form it looks like a combination of languages mixed together.

    My vote goes to Romanian!

    Romanian is the winner!!!

It sounds so beautiful and Romantic <3

Thanks for your work in the Versus Series. While I liked both Romanian and Hungarian, being of Hungarian descent, I choose Hungarian. :)

Aw, thank you so much for supporting the Versus Series. We still have a lot more to go!!

    Romanian. Romanian. Romanian.

    Hungarian wins!!!

(that text reminded me of the aristocats haha!)

Minden ember macska nem lehet :3

Both sound nice but Romanian sounds better

Both languages are nice, but I like Hungarian a bit more.

Hungarian: I had the impression it had taken a lot of influences from Russian, though it has it's own interesting turn towards it. There are parts which are similar to what I would think of Finnish (which is not surprising, considering their origins), making it interesting. Romanian: Being exposed to the language a lot, I have a slight bias towards it. It sounds really nice flowing, taking influences from different languages alike. Basically, it's unique while holding itself in the Romantic Language tree.

    Hungarian: Romanian -- 0:1

Hungarian: It sounds a bit harsh in some places, due to the "sh" sounds, but I think it works with the song. I like how the consonant sounds are emphasized when sung. Romanian: I like the way Romanian is sung, a lot. It adds a dimension of intensity towards how it sounds; however, to the untrained eye (and possibly because of this song), it sounds a bit like Spanish (which is not a bad thing at all!).

Hungarian: Romanian -- 1:1; this is because despite listening to a lot more Romanian songs (which I greatly enjoy), one could pick out Hungarian from a mile away. And it would work.

Hungarian: It's really nice, I guess. The one thing that stands out to me are the accent marks, making it sharper than it is. Romanian: I like how everything is rounded out, and those accent marks really stand out. It's rare that you see them like that anywhere else {though I know î is used in French and ș in Turkish)

    Hungarian: Romanian -- 1:2

Overall, I think Romanian is a nice language, but I wouldn't mind learning Hungarian.

I think many (maybe most?) of Hungarian's Slavic borrowings date back to a time period before the Slavic languages differentiated.

No idea about Hungarian. I may try to learn it in the future. But I think it should sound better than Romanian, for sure, no matter what other people say. Just try having a Romanian wife for half a century... :)

      1. Romanian (though Hungarian gets a funny point just for the topic of the news broadcast)
      2. Romanian
      3. Romanian
