Yes, the English should be "They descended the stairs" or "They came down the stairs."

Depending on the position of the narrator they 'came' or 'went' 'down the stairs' would be more normal in England. one might perhaps say 'They got down the stairs to find a flood' or 'they got down the stairs promptly when i called' but without some bit of context it sounds a bit odd written above. There is also ambiguity as stairs could be the thing being got.
