"I did this to do this" French sentence structure

How would I conjugate the second verb/structure the French sentence to translate a sentence that uses the "did this to do this" structure?

Example: I left the class to see my father.

  1. Je suis partie la classe voir mon père

  2. Je suis partie la classe à voir mon père

  3. Je suis partie la classe pour que je puisse voir mon père

Which of the above (if any) would be correct?

I think it would be J'ai quitté la classe pour voir mon père or Je suis sortie de la classe pour voir mon père.

None of these are actually correct.

"Je suis partie de la classe pour voir mon père" (assuming you are female) would be the correct answer. You cannot say je suis partie la classe. You need "de".

"Je suis partie de la class pour pouvoir voir mon père" would also be correct. (in this case it would mean "to be able to see my father" rather than "to see my father", though)

Ripcurlgirl is right and I can add some more info:

  • "Pour + infinitive" or "pour que + subjunctive" translate the meanings of "so as to, in order to, with the intention/purpose of...". Therefore, your sentence 2. is incorrect.

  • As long as the subject is the same in the two clauses, please use an infinitive rather than "que + subjunctive". So your sentence 3. is not to be used.

  • "Partir de" is the translation for "to leave from" (a place). Alternatively, you can use "quitter", which is a transitive verb: "J'ai quitté la classe..."

  • "Partir" is one of those verbs which do not need a preposition to introduce another verb in infinitive. Therefore, "Je suis partie voir mon père" is perfectly correct and you don't need "pour". However, since you added "de la classe", the sentence is more comfortable with "pour".

Summary: "I left the class to see my father" translates to (in order of my own preferences):

  • J'ai quitté la classe pour voir mon père
  • Je suis partie de la classe pour voir mon père
  • Je suis partie de la classe voir mon père

I'm not exactly fluent in French but I think it's, "Je suis partie la classe pour voir mon père". Hope this helps.
