Bugs in the Discussions area.

When the Duolingo programmers updated the discussion area recently (about a couple of months ago) they introduced a number of bugs which seem to be still there! Are there any plans to fix these bugs and is there any timescale for this or are they just going to leave the Discussion area a buugy place? It really does not do anything for your reputation to ignore this matter.

Three examples of the bugs that still exist.

1) When a new post is saved, it does not always appear and the OP often repears his post and the original post magically appears in the list as well as the new post.

2) If I reply to a post and save it, the reply appears OK but is not counted in the list of replies giving the impression that no one has responded.

3) if I upvote or downvote a discussion it is recognised in the discussion but not neccesarily in the list of discusssions and occasionally I am able to upvote/downvote it again.

While these bugs are not game changing they are very annoying (especially the first two) and need to be resolved in order to restore your reputation and that of Duoling’s.

Most important:

  • 4) The biggest problem are the newly introduced EDIT comment bugs:

4a) When I try to re-edit my posted (edited) comment, I get the form of the OLD text, not of the already posted (edited) text.

4b) You constantly overwrite your edited text with old data, if you are not careful enough.
I always have to double / triple check....

4c) The new forum software after the update seems NOT REFRESHING / POLLING the new comment data from the database, once it is posted.

The indicator for this is, that I quite often can not read my updated comment (after the edit), until I refresh (F5) the whole thread.
Sometimes it is displayed....very very strange.

4d) Is there maybe any sync problem with the forum discussion database / server and a 2nd online cache???

4e) Now I had to wait and REFRESH 3 TIMES to see my "edit comment" changes - before it was displaying the old data, even after a refresh.
The first two thread F5 refreshes were NOT polling my edit text changes from the thread comment database!!!
.
.

  • 5) Sometime even my new posted comment completely disappears and I have to reload the whole thread (F5) until it reappears.

I am also interested to hear about any deadline and if you are even working on these issues :(

Another suggestion:

Or please rollback to the old (tested, working) forum discussion software version, until all the text EDIT bugs have been fixed and QS tested so we can work at least the next 3-6 months with something more reliable.

Somehow the "maintenance update" definitely was NOT just about server or data consolidation, but instead of your team seems to have deployed a NEW version of a - completely un-tested - forum discussion software.

Pardon me asking, but what is the real benefit of the new forum software version? Speed?

Is it the vendor, a foreign 3rd party software company or your DuoLingo backend team who has full source control of the version and bugfixing?

I think the whole point of these new updates was to speed it up. While it has worked to some extent, it really has created more issues than it has fixed.

The updated discussion forums are much SLOWER than the old forums - when I click on the Sentences or New tab on my phone, it can take 10-15 seconds to show the list of posts. Whoever wrote this code apparently never learned how to use the profiling tools available in modern browsers (or, more likely, just didn't give a damn about user experience).

i've had a few questions on the Russian for english learners course have nothing visible on the comment page, then once i typed in the first comment and hit post, would give me a "404: page not found" error with he duo character to the left. --i've found this roughly 6-7 times when using the pc, and when i go back to the same questions, it happens again. it's a question-specific problem.

I'm wondering the same thing. In the discussion about the maintenance they mentioned they'd work on the bell for example, but that was also 2 months ago. Meanwhile, there is new stuff on the website like achievements and the rings in the discussion. I'd rather have bugs fixed than new superficial stuff, that is not as important to the functionality of the site.

Hi Sue,

I couldn't more agree with you! Of cource Thomas is right when he writes frontend and backend designers/programmers are in most cases different teams but nevertheless there are two month passed since the maintenance. The bugs it caused weren't there before so to eliminate them is fixing not writing a new code. So I wouldn' call two month a short time.

A mix of several software components as Thomas mentioned is always a problem. Most of the times you have to work with other companies to solve issues and that can generate new problems. But as your said they are working on new stuff instead fixing the old. The question is why.

Best regards Angel

IMHO they are different frontend and backend teams which might work independently on several stuff at the same time.

One backend team (e.g forum software maintenance update) still might have only limited resources.

You can N O T not expect from a "ring frontend designer" to fix backend forum software edit database and caching problems and vise versa!

And the "web achievements" thing is probably easier to code for a 1-2 man team from fresh than this more advanced tricky discussion forum software thing....

The rings are not just frontend though, they have new functionality too; first there are more people that get rings, like the hosts and teacher ambassadors and there are two levels depending on how much the "ambassadors" do in their field. So I expect there was some backend coding on the discussion software as well.

Hi,

I would also like to know if there is a intention to fix these bugs. Also if the bell will work again some day.

Best regards Angel

And it seems to be getting worse not better, today when I got onto the discussions, there was still my old streak with the checkmark in the topbar and stayed that way even when I opened a couple topics. It took a few minutes and between 5-10 clicks until the checkmark disappeared.

I'll bet that will cause people losing their streaks...

Hi Sue,

Yes, I've noticed that, too. I've got always two taps open, one for duo lessons and one for the forum. The last round about two weeks it took the system very often more than just a view clicks to syncronize the two taps. Sometimes minutes. the same when I made lessons on my tablet. It behaves like a old woman with a stick.

best regards Angel

i have been reporting a problem for more than 15 days now.Why it has not been fixed???

November 28, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Thomas.Heiss

Probably as it is a little bit more difficult to patch all those issues in short-time, especially if it is a mix of several software components (e.g foreign code, own code, etc.) playing together.

More fundamental backend code changes would need deep testing / QS...so that alone might add another 2-6 weeks....

Reporting it more than once isn't going to fix it faster.

Duolingo is hiring so if anybody knows how to fix these bugs, they should apply for a job, working at Duolingo. I hear the salary and benefits are good and you get a free lunch every day and you also get sick pay.

good idea for people who want to move to the USA. For others this isn't really an option. :-)

There are open positions in Berlin and Madrid as well as in Pittsburgh, but not every software developer wants to live in one of these three cities.

Another annoying problem is that some new posts in threads aren't displayed. I "follow" a lot of sentence discussions, and I regularly get e-mail notifications of comments or questions that have been added to these discussions, but since the "update", it is frequently the case that that comment isn't visible when I click on the link in the e-mail. It doesn't matter how often I refresh the page, or even if I login in a different browser, it's as though the poster deleted their comment. Sometimes, I even see someone else follow-up to one of these "invisible" comments.

Until I add a comment to that thread, and suddenly, the post that I was looking for shows up after all.

Thanks for pointing this out!

I agree, I experienced the same with e-mail notifications, reading a NEW comment by a poster, but not seeing it in the thread, no matter how often I refresh it; even after I added my own comment somewhere else in the thread hierachy.

This definitely just a new problem of the forum maintenance update and I have not experienced this the other 384 days before with the old forum software the whole 2017 year or old Python portal 2016+2017.
