Favorite Netflix movies in Japanese?

Hey All,

I love to train my ear with movies or tv shows but I've been having a little trouble finding the right content (kids movies maybe?).

Do any of you have favorites that you would recommend watching to beef up basic conversational Japanese?

Thank you,

I don't think this is very educational but you could always watch Anime. its fun and you could watch it with subtitles. If you want some regular knowledge don't watch magical girl or gundum animes and stick to slice of life type of genre which usually has normal conversations to listen to. I hope this helps!

Here's a catalogue of movies/series on Netflix with good subtitles, sorted by language:

Also, here's a free extension that adds bilingual subs, pop-up dictionary, and improved playback control:

I'm not sure about Netflix, but I've heard that its good to watch children's shows because they teach the language just like how a kid in Japan would learn it. Shimajiro is one I've heard recommended a few times before, because it focuses specifically on learning, similar to Sesame Street. I think you can find episodes on Youtube. がんばって!

Japanese Style Originator, Mushi-shi, Sword Art Online and Your Lie in April, are all on Netflix instant watch. Japanese Style Originator is very informative, live action, about Japanese culture, the others are anime.

So far I have completed the Blue Exorcist and Case Closed anime on Netflix. Currently watching Naruto. I love them all.

Case Closed might have helped the most in my studies because it's a detective show, and it seems like they're in Tokyo so all of the vocabulary and dialogue transfers over to real life.

I would suggest Folktales from Japan. It's not a movie, and I don't believe it's on Netflix. However, it is on Chrunchyroll. There is currently almost 300 episodes of the series, so there is no shortage of episodes to watch!

Your Lie in April is my favorite anime, and they repeat many words so I picked up quite a lot. If you want to watch something made for kids, I would suggest Chi's Sweet Home or Shirokuma Cafe.

I don’t know about those movies on Netflix but I have watched NHK taiga dramas. They are educating the history which I find interesting. It’s just that they speak so formally and use old words that are not so frequent anymore but there’s still a lot of Japanese that is spoken today in them. Hope you find something useful for you to watch. Cheers!

Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories is charming and a very useful ear-training show. The pacing and situations are very lowkey and not in a fantasy or unusual setting. The show is about a diner in Tokyo and all the little dramas of its patrons.

Netflix has a series called サラリマン甘太郎. (Kantarou the Salaryman). It's pretty funny
