I often miss spell words that use these letters they often sound the same is there anyway to help me to tell the difference.

This explains it, and there are many other explanations online, including on YouTube with examples. Also, Basics 1 in the Duo lessons has a brief explanation (IIRC), and the Russian forum has explanations as well, although they are hard to find. If you go over the rules a few times and then listen for the differences (especially in spoken Russian, rather than TTS Russian) it does not take long to get used this.

Notice that is a post in the Russian forum and the vowel in "or" is (probably for you too) just a little shorter than the "о" at the end of the sentence. The usual font on Duo for Russian has slightly larger lowercase letters. Also, the value of the vowel in or is 6F (hex) while that of the other is 043E. So betarage means Russian а and о. But you're right, the question could have been more specific.
