All German Progress Completely Reset

Somehow, overnight, my German tree seems to have disappeared. When I hover over the drop-down list, it's simply not there. I've tried accessing it from the 'Courses' section, but it simply led me to start the course anew. It's also not showing on my profile! I'm really mad because I was level 24, it's my only language I'm really serious about, and I had the whole tree finished, and only 6 skills away from the whole tree being gold! Has this ever happened to anyone else? I'm sure I didn't reset it, and I really hope there's a way for the DL team to restore it. Should I fill out a Bug Report, but all the times I've done that throughout my two years of Duolingoing I've recieved nothing about them fixing the bug. If this doesn't get fixed, I might just end up leaving Duolingo completely.

I'm sure I didn't reset it, ......

That's a nightmare!

At the moment Duolingo is very buggy, if you use outdated browsers, operating systems and Duolingo Apps.

How about yours? What are you using and which version numbers do they have?

I have no idea, I've been using a school-issued laptop, and it's pretty new, just came out this year or the year before. I think I might just stop doing Duolingo altogether. It's a shame, I really wanted to get a job involving languages, and Duolingo seemed like the perfect platform to help myself along. I just don't see how I can regain two years of learning from the beginning. I think I'm done.

Losing the tree does not mean you've lost the learning you acquired in studying it, far from it. If you do the placement test, you can see how much you test out of, then test out of individual skills for the remainder of the tree, if you've really learned the material. If you have, it won't be too difficult to do, and if you haven't, you can treat it as if you were just reviewing, since it would indicate that you need to review those skills. Sure, you've still lost the XP you'd accumulated, but XP =/= learning and what you've learned doesn't just evaporate when you lose the XP.

I've created another account solely for the purpose of seeing how far a placement test would get me recently, and it was not far at all, not even halfway through the tree. Also, all the xp is lost, which is a motivator for me, because i was (relatively) close to level 25. Just think about how much time this takes to get back to not even where I was before. This past couple weeks I was doing about 500 xp a day, and really going through my tree, but now all of this is gone. I hope you understand how devestating all this hard work is for me. Imagine all of your French work, gone. It's really hard.

Let's do some troubleshooting, because your "German flag Level 24" has also disappeared from this discussion now.

Somehow, overnight, my German tree seems to have disappeared

I've been using a school-issued laptop ......

Does this mean:

  • Anyone else has been able to use this laptop after you stopped using Duolingo?
    If yes:

  • Are you sure, you logged out your Duolingo account before you left the laptop?

nope, my school doesnt have any idea of what to spend its money on so everybody has their own personal laptop that they carry around with them every day and take home with them every night.

Do you log out every time, if you stop using Duolingo?

It still shows up on your comment, but not on your profile page. Strange.

That's my worst nightmare. And you were almost at level 25!

I'm really sorry. You should fill out a bug report. I've sent three, but only one was answered though.

What course have you finished? English-German?
Or from any different base/source language?

Are you 100% sure that you have choosen the correct base/source language e.g "From English"?

Try this all on a computer with the "full desktop mode" enabled, not the compact mobile view (try it with compatible browsers like Firefox, Chrome, etc.).

This would be the direct EN-DE course URL link: https://www.duolingo.com/course/de/en/Learn-German-Online

You just need to click the button "Switch to course" (this does NOT mean that it starts a NEW course"). In the picture there is the word "Learning" mit einem "Häkchen" / checkmark, all is good.
However if "no LEARNING" appears or the button shows "Start course" (I checked for EN-Russia in my browser) it would definitely mean that your German progress has been somehow reset.

What is however quite weird with your profile (and the current selected base/source language", that German has already been added with level 1, 0XP and 60XP to go for the next level.

Maybe from the wrong base/source L1 language????

I can check your profile later on a different browser with Stats/DuoTweak enabled, which at least tells me what your current base language is.

And some people can also read your extended user profile with a better XML formatting, so you definitely what courses you have all registered for.

Trust me, I know how to navigate Duolingo, I've been doing it for two years and am very familiar with it. I was also doing the reverse tree before my EN->DE tree disappeared, and that's still there.

I had to make a new thread, because I could not reply to your last comment.

That's probably the reason you lost al the progress in your course "German for English speakers".

Possible cause:
You have shut down the computer, while Duolingo was synchronizing the data of the German course on your computer with its servers.

Solution for the future:
Always log out Duolingo, when you stop using it.
(this is also a safe habit in other computer programs, to prevent other people to sneak in your computer, data and accounts)

idk why it reset my german progress though, but the good news is that i got an email from DL saying they are working on fixing it. pretty sure it was an automated message, but it's still kinda reassuring so i'm going to do the bare minimum to keep up my streak just in case they do fix it
