No, they're not.

Imagine your parents would split up. If your mother or father would marry another person who also has a child from a previous marriage, then that child would be your stepbrother or stepsister.

If your mother or father married another person and they got a child together, that child would be your half-brother or half-sister.

I like to think of it as half-siblings share half of your DNA, although I don't think the distinction between these and stepsiblings is clearly made in the Romance languages... I'm not sure, anyway...

If you want to get technical... (sorry, science teacher here)... Due to the way genes get randomly picked in the formation of sperm and egg cells, full siblings (who are not identcal twins) share about half their DNA.

So, two half-siblings share only half of the DNA from the parent-in-common, or 1/4 overall.

Thanks for that! I'm an eternal learnerz so it's nice to find a teacher who enjoys explaining these little things (l-and not like my colleagues, who tend to look at me as if I were weird whenever I pose a question related to the subject they teach.... It's just... I don't know, there are many things that I had to study when I was in secodary school and couldn't quite grasp, so now, as an adult, I honestly want to know. The vast majority of them just tell me 'google it'. I don't want to google it, I want to have an interesting conversation!

Well, in Spanish 'half brother' is medio hermano, and 'step brother', hermanastro (which sounds awful imho, as if you hated the poor guy or something).
