This is the first time I've seen a one-syllable Sino-Korean word.

Unusual for sure! That's probably more common as a suffix -- usually you would specify what sort of prize, or in 상금 for a monetary one. I looked up a way of saying it with more precedent in Japanese (御褒美) and it came to 보상(報償) "reward" which I also see recommended if slightly misspelled online . . .

Does it help a lot knowing Kanji/Hanzi for learning korean?

I'd say yes, it makes remembering all the sino-korean words much easier.

This is the second character in "授賞式" , which is the hanja character equivalent of 시상식.

授賞式=>수상식 施賞式=>시상식
