Would "seemed" not be a close enough translation for "tvářila se"?

I would say no. TVÁŘIT SE is from TVÁŘ = face. So it is closer to "making faces" or "having an angry expression" SEEM seems (no pun intended) to be little too ambiguous. Czech equivalent would rather be "Zdála se (být) naštvaná"
