Is this in the sense of "not allowed to" watch TV? Or "were not able to" watch TV?

This would be in the "not allowed to" sense, since the verb is "smět."

Není tohle spíše „Nemohli jsme se dívat na televizi.“? Mám pocit, že by správný překlad měl být "We must not watch TV.", ale rád budu vyveden z omylu.

We must not watch tv' neni minuly cas. Takze to znamena, ze se nesmime divat nyni, nebo v blizke budoucnosti. Nicmene ja bych to chapala tak, ze je to na zaklade naseho vlastniho prani. Asi jako rikame "nesmime zrat tu cokoladu!" protoze nechceme byt obezni, ale laka nas to a nezakazal nam to lekar, je to nase vrouci prani.

U toho 'could not' je to hranicni. Z te vety neni uplne 100% jasne, jestli jsme se nesmeli nebo nemohli divat, ale muze to znamenat oboji. Vetsinou z okolniho kontextu zjistite, ktera z tech variant je pravdepodobejsi. "Our father was very strict. We could not watch TV." - Nas otec byl velmi prisny. Nemohli jsme se divat na televizi. Vidite, ze i v cestine se da pouzit ta varianta s 'nemoci', i kdyz je z toho jasne, ze to bylo kvuli otcove vuli. Cloveka az prekvapi, kolikrat si ty vyrazy koresponduji a pritom je primarne pochopime jinak, az v kontextu dostanou jiny smysl.

Pokud byste mel potrebu primarne vyjadrit, ze jsme nesmeli, byla by vam take prijata veta "We were not allowed..."
