"I knew you were having your baby because-"
"I knew you were having your baby because your Duolingo activity went down to almost nothing."- accurate assessment from a RL friend I also know on Duolingo.
My baby boy was born on March 15! I lost my streak in Portuguese and Spanish, but was able to at least do the minimum to keep my streaks in Italian and French every day and apparently, German? I was under the influence of pain medication and a weird sleep cycle and don't have a clear recollection of all the details...
EDIT: Full disclosure: I may have used a streak for a day- I was equipped just in case labor took more than 24 hours, and wasn't clear on how that functioned until recently. But like I said, pain medication, so I'm not entirely sure what happened.
Congratulations! Both for your baby and your streaks. :-)
It looks awesome to have level 25 on all languages.
Did you do both trees in each of the language pairs?
Thanks! I'm not quite finished with Portuguese, but yes to all others.
And to make thinks more interesting, would you try trees between two languages different from English? For example Spanish - French or other pairs available.
Wonderful place with you and Olimo supplying new learners.
Olimo got lots of advice and links for Lulaby's songs for infants
Sing them to sleep in Italian
wake them in German
lovely happiness .
smiles and Lingots
Congratulations, lolaphilologist! Hats off to you for having maintained your amazing streak during this phase of your life, you are truly a Duolingo legend!
It took me some time to grasp because I initially thought your opening sentence was one you found on one of the lessons. :)
Out of interest, how much time do you actually spent on duolingo a day? I almost finished the Italian tree and now I need roughly one hour per day to keep my progress (3 new skills and get all the others golden again). Would be a nightmare to do that for 3 or 4 languages.
Outside of Portuguese, I mostly do immersion. It takes me about an hour to practice all the languages. Lately I can do 3 languages, but only sometimes all five. Just trying to get acclimated to a new normal.
Congratulations on your new baby boy and your very impressive streak. That type of dedication to your streak is truly amazing. Will you raise Benjamin in a multilingual environment?
Yes! He's going to be going to a Mandarin Chinese language immersion daycare. This of course will make Mandarin a priority for me too. I'll probably expose him to a lot, but only do the immersion for one language until I can tell how it's influencing his development, and then adjust from there. I've known a lot of bilingual kids- it's such a huge advantage.
I can see that Benjamin has a bright future ahead because he has a very responsible and far-sighted mother! Congratulations! New born babies must be adorable! >.< In the future, our team will of course take advice from our amazing community and decide what is the best for our Chinese course! Now it's still a bit too early to talk about it. By the way, the English course for Chinese speakers is going to enter Beta in no time. :D
lolaphilogist, while your son will be able to go to a Mandarin immersion, the way things are, you might not have an opportunity to do a Mandarin Immersion on Duolingo. It is unfortunate that a few things seems to be coming in the way and changing the status quo would take the entire Duolingo community to rally for the change. Please look at the entire thread on this link and express your voice.
Thank you, jitengore! We definitely need the community's voice on this. It would be a huge pity if Immersion section is ditched permanently for incubator courses, and I believe that the Duo team is not going to ditch it.
Congratulations!!! :) I wish an amazing life for your baby!!
And your streak it's remarkable!!
You're both kicking my butt and making people, very impressive! Keep up the good work!
Congratulations! I also had some feeling when I noticed I suddenly scored more points than you :-) Amazing that you were able to keep up your streak during all of this! I wish you the best of luck and a healthy baby boy!
Congratulations! It's very amazing to keep so long streak and get level 25 on all languages, are you begin to learn all languages at the same time?
No- I took Spanish as a child in Texas, then added German in High School, and French and Italian while at University. I added Portuguese last August.
congratilations!Hope you can keep up with everything!I bet he will be great at different languages just like you,new born babys can be soooo cute!:)
Great news! And a bit scary because it seems like yesterday when you were 28 weeks and I was 20... :)
Fantastic for you ! go ahead! congratulations! I wish you good loock in your life.
Congratulations with your baby boy! And awesome that you could maintain your streak on some of the languages and thus also your overall streak! Have some lingots (though I guess at your streak you're swimming in them already!)
