When does a monosyllable have an accent, and when not? It seems completely random. Any guidance welcome.

In general, monosyllables do not have an accent. However, some monosyllables have an accent, in order to avoid being confused with other monosyllables. Such examples are:

  • Ή (= or) has an accent so that we can differentiate it from η (= the).

  • Πώς (= how) has an accent so that we can differentiate it from πως (= that: it introduces an indirect quotation).

  • Πού (= where) has an accent so that we can differentiate it from που (= that: it introduces a relative clause).

  • Μού (= me) may have an accent so that we can differentiate it from μου (= my). The same happens with σού & σου and τού & του.

  • However, μια and μία are practically interchangeable.

I hope you find this answer helpful. :-)
