"ihm" is Dativ, "ihn" is Akkusativ.

mit, nach, von, bei, zu, aus, gegenüber => prepositions requiring the Dativ => ihm

durch, für, ohne, um, gegen => prepositions requiring the Accusativ => ihn

A bit more difficult: an, auf, hinter, neben, vor, über, unter, in, zwischen => can require Dativ or Akkusativ depending on describing a movement or a static action.

But a lot of Germans have problems with it, especially, if they are mumbling ;-)
