Managing Netflix foreign language audio and subtitles

Many shows on Netflix are available with a variety of foreign language and subtitle options. In particular, all programs produced by Netflix have a rich array of languages available. This post is a summary of how to manage the language options.

You can get a complete list of subtitle/audio options for any given language by using the search bar on the Netflix home page. Just search, for example for "German subtitles" or "German audio." Once you've located movies in the target language, the trick is actually getting the desired subtitles/audio when you watch the films. .While a movie is playing, subtitles and audio options are listed when you scroll along the bar under the film; the icon is near the lower right hand corner. However, some of the subtitles/audio options actually available might not appear when you scroll over this icon.

Netflix transmits only a limited number of languages to each customer for a given movie, even though more options may be available. I suspect this is a bandwidth issue. The languages listed above the subtitles/audio icon depend on account settings and customer location. This means that you might not see German listed as an option even though German subtitles & audio are actually available. The solution is simple: Just go to your account settings, choose Language, pick your target language, and hit the Save button. If you do this for Deutsch, all German options will then appear whenever available. Do be aware that if you switch to German, almost everything on your account will appear in German. If you watch stuff in German for a while, some lurking Netflix subroutine will identify you as a German speaker, so you will stillI see German options displayed even if you switch back to another language. Well, at least for a while: It seems that the language option go back to the default after a few weeks. If you've switched back to English and your German subtitles suddenly disappear, just head back to the account settings page and select Deutsch again.

I've been watching the show "Dark". It's Netflix's first original German series. Really good

If you have the luxury of a quality VPN located in your target language's country, that also helps because then Netflix can show you everything it has a license to show in Germany (for example, like the magic School bus in Deutsch) :-)

Here's a catalogue of movies/series on Netflix with good subtitles, sorted by language: http://languagelearningwithnetflix.com/catalogue.html

Also, here's a free extension that adds bilingual subs, pop-up dictionary, and improved playback control: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/lln-language-learning-wit/hoombieeljmmljlkjmnheibnpciblicm
