Tip: “이미” is the regular way to express “already.” “벌써” means “already,” but it also expresses surprise or shock. (Source: Go! Billy Korean)

벌써 감독은 퇴근했어요 is also right

In English to express surprise, "already" is usually placed at the end of the sentence, possibly with a question mark (similar to a tag question) i.e.

감독은 벌써 퇴근했어요! => The director left work already? (End position: Mild shock/surprise)

감독은 이미 퇴근했어요! The director has already left work (Mid position: plain statement)
