Duolingo Podcast is blocked in Egypt

Hi Duo,

I'm from Egypt, where medium.com is blocked.

For that reason I cannot access the Podcast page linked in the Labs tab as it's hosted by medium (redirection link: https://medium.com/m/global-identity?redirectUrl=https://podcast.duolingo.com/) It seems that other countries have also blocked medium in the past like China and Malaysia (not sure if it's still blocked there)

Would you mind hosting the podcast on duolingo.com once it's out of labs?

Thanks

Hi Amgad,
The announcement post provided links to several possible platforms to listen to the podcast. If you still cannot access it through any of them, try using a VPN to bypass the regional restrictions on medium.com.

Hi Arachnje,

I use VPN but I think Duo shouldn't rely on having their users access their internet via VPN

You don't need to go through medium.com. You can access the Duolingo Podcast homepage directly if you type the link (https://podcast.duolingo.com/) in the address bar of your browser. Does that work?

Later edit: the page was not accessible when I disabled medium.com from scrip blocker as Multitaal said, so users that don't have access to medium won't be able to listen to the podcast.

The video is not visible there without medium.com even though the video is hosted on vimeo.com. It would be easier if they included the direct links to the videos.

I right-clicked on the link given in Labs, and chose Copy link from the pop up menu. This what I got:
https://podcast.duolingo.com/
As you can see, it is a direct link to the podcast homepage; not everyone is being redirected through medium.com, so the issue Amgad is facing is probably regional.

Later edit: the page was not accessible when I disabled medium.com from scrip blocker as Multitaal said, so users that don't have access to medium won't be able to listen to the podcast.

Yes, but if you visit that page you still need access to medium.com to play the video. That is easy to see if you use a script blocker. If you block scripts from medium.com there is no video player on the page, just a grey square. Also there is no way to see the direct links to the videos on vimeo.com that I posted.

You're right. I didn't notice it earlier. And what Multitaal said was correct; even though I can access the page directly, I won't see the video if I disable medium.com from the script blocker. I'll edit my earlier reply to avoid confusion.

Duo Lingo cannot possibly be expected to manage the censorship of other nations.

It seems something has changed. The fourth podcast is still on medium.com but not on vimeo.com anymore. It is now embedded via radiopublic.com. Just radio, no video with the spoken texts. And medium won't play the content from that site because of my Do not track settings. :(

DNT

Fortunately the Libsynpro and Stitcher links work directly without logging in or installing other software.

What if you click on "Show Embed"? You should then be able to play the audio.

It is strange that the DNT warning appears for medium.com, as you can read on their site that they respect the DNT setting (as long as you are not logged in):

Yes, that does work if I allow script from both radiopublic.com and libsyn.com. I think I failed to allow the last one yesterday.

I was really confused about the DNT warning but then I understood it to mean that radiopublic does not meet medium's policy standard.

I was confused, too, but of course you are right and the warning is from medium.com about the embedded radiopublic content.
