I have a question regarding this grammar explanation: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/3732938 I have already posted the question as a comment a few months ago, but I guess noone reads that thread anymore :)

So here we go again:

Quote: "3. .... 'Het' is always used for ... and for words derived from verbs. ... 5. 'Het' is also used for the gerund: 'het zwemmen' (swimming), 'het dansen' (dancing), etc."

Which words derived from verbs (except gerund) are het-words?

This is very unclear to me because there are actually many nouns that are derived from verbs that are actually de-words.

For example these nouns ending in -aar and -ing: de handelaar, de molenaar, de betaling, de uitnodiging, de ontdekking,

See http://www.dutchgrammar.com/en/?n=NounsAndArticles.05 for more examples.

Hi LarsHogberg!

Some of the de woorden that you give as an example are professions (molenaar, handelaar), which are always de (it also says so in the link from Duolingo that you provide). Words that end on -ing or -st after the stem of a verb are also always de.

I think what they meant by "words that derived from verbs" are the words described in this link from 3 and 4: http://ans.ruhosting.nl/e-ans/03/03/02/03/01/body.html

Let me translate (from point 3):

The following are het woorden:

[3] Derivations of a verb without an additive (whether or not with vowel and/or consonant change), starting with the prefixes: be-, ge-, ont- or ver-.
Examples are: het begin (the start), berouw (repentance), geloof (faith), genot (pleasure/delight), geval (case/event), onthaal (welcome/reception), ontslag (resignation), ontwerp (design), verband (connection/link), verhoor (interrogation), verzet (resistance)

Exceptions are for example: de verbouw (renovation), de verhuur (rental/leasing), de verkoop (sale)

[4] Derivations of a stem of a verb with the prefix ge-
Such as: het geblaf (barking), gedoe (hassle/fuss), gejuich (cheer/jubilation), geloop (walking), gerace (hurrying/racing), geschrijf (writing), gezeur (nagging).

I hope this helps! :)

Even wat 'gezeur'.

de verbouw = the growing / cultivating
(de verbouwing = the renovation)

Also an "s" went missing in "geschrijf".

Thank you, though "de verbouw" is also the renovation according to vandale.
