visszajönnek and visszatérnek: synonyms?

In Preverbs 2 I used visszajönnek instead of visszatérnek which I see was a new vocabulary word but it had not yet been introduced so I think that visszajönnek should have been accepted. I reported it. I'm just cranky about having to do these lessons over and over when I have correct answers. Will I ever finish without cheating?

Visszajönni means to come back and visszatérni means to return. On www.szinonimaszotar.hu jönni and térni are not considered synonyms.

I am just curious what was the sentence? I feel like these words should be interchangable in most contexts.

It took me a while to find the sentence. Here it is: A lányok visszatérnek az étterembe és visszaülnek az asztalhoz .

I agree with you Zsuzsi. I think they should be accepted as synonyms. They are listed as such in the dictionary. I was just wondering though, does visszater imply a greater distance in time as well as space? Like to return to a place you have left long ago, or from a long voyage, as opposed to just coming back from the other room, or someplace you left recently?

Visszatér means return (intransitive), visszajön & visszamegy mean come back & go back. So the latter imply the direction of the movement relative to the speaker, otherwise there's no difference in meaning.

I don't know much about the technical limitations, but imho visszatér should be a synoym of both visszajön & -megy, but visszajön shouldn't be a synoym of visszamegy. (But then again, synonymity might be transitive in Duolingo's system.)

Yes, I think it needs to be pointed out once again that "visszatérni" ("return") does not indicate a direction, while "visszajönni" ("come back") does. They are only synonyms when the returning is to "here".

Visszajön and visszatér - come back and return - are two ways of saying one thing. I have the same problem in Danish: I think that lægge, sætte nad putte means the same in a certain context. In a Duolingo Danish lesson I can only guess which word is wanted if someone puts something somewhere.
