I've made a plug-in that shows the meaning of character on mouseover

Hi everyone,

I'm the guy who made the traditional Chinese duolingo extension for Chrome.

Update You can download the beta now, it has the first 80+ lessons (24 skills) don't forget to turn traditional off, as it is on by default.

here was an early preview.

Is there a want for this in the community? Do you have any requests or criticism or thoughts that may hinder me in my progress? I've done about 100 words of the 1000 you learn so far. Help is always welcome if you have a GitHub and you want to contribute please let me know!

Here is my other project (Duolingo Simplified to Traditional Chinese) it isn't the mouseover extension download link | YouTube | GitHub

I've started making an extension for Chrome for both Traditional and Simplified that will show character meanings on mouseover.

Awesome. Don't forget to publicize it, otherwise people won't find and use it.
And the toggle idea (always show the meaning of the character) is great too.

Don't worry, not forgotten the toggle. In fact; already written https://imgur.com/EhVV9CG.

How should I publicise it do you think?

I've never made a Firefox plug-in, if the framework is similar I could certainly try.

This is so cool! Love it!

Hi,

The first eight lessons now have definitions: Greeting 1, Numbers, Name, Greeting 2, Food 1, Occupation, Contact and Nation.

Let me know what you think!

I think it'll be very helpful and I look forward to using it. Thank you

The beta is ready for testing. The first eight skills are available. There are one or two errors I've noticed but please give me your feedback.

LOVE this!! Thank you!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/nickIopez

I would love to contribute!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/RobinCard

After I've published the beta tomorrow, I am going to create a (private) site that will allow users to edit/add to the definitions. I will send you a log-in.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/kcheng0222

Put me on the list too!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/esperanzaninja

That's super cool! If you finish this one and need ideas, you should make a plugin that generates a list of all the vocab. :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/adougl

Something like the plugin you're designing is my top "want" to improve my Chinese learning experience, definitely appreciated! Not sure how effective of a contributor I can be but my GitHub is alex-douglas if you'd like some help!

Fantastic! just what this course needs. Here's a lingot (and my infinite gratitude) :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/RobinCard

Greeting 3 and Location 1 have now been added.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/amyhier

This is awesome! Could you possibly make another version or an option so that it can be always shown? I barely use my mouse and it would be great to just have the meaning there as I'm learning.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/RobinCard

Good idea, I'll put in a toggle to always show the meanings of characters.

Hi Robin, To answer your question: "Is there a want for this in the community?" my answer is YES, THANK YOU!!! I so appreciate this effort -- and only wish I could help you. By the way, you mention that there are 1,000 characters "so far." Is that the total number of characters that one learns by doing all the lessons? It would be great to have a list of these characters on the site. Thanks again for all you're doing to help me revive my Chinese. Warm regards,

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/RobinCard

Hey Rita, thanks for your appreciation. I'm going to put a beta version up tomorrow, it will contain the course up to the Contact skill, and about another 300 characters I've managed to translate.

Some words are really difficult to translate without sounding technical, especially the particles/suffixes.

I will send you all a link when I'm done :)

Great stuff! I installed your plugin and it didn't work.. Upon further reading - which I should have done in the first place - I noticed that's another project, Simplified to Traditional. Can't wait till you release the beta tomorrow so I can start using Duolingo alongside Memrise :-)

Thanks man! I've been working on this all day, it's nearly 2am here here's a progress video.

What are the chances of you doing something like this in firefox via greasemonkey?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/RobinCard

Most probably I will do it as a normal Firefox plug-in

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Lesita0

Anyway I do not like the extension on a browser, the feature is ammmmmmazing.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/RobinCard

Without getting too technical; I've tried to keep the extension extremely lightweight, it is around 60kb when uncompressed (although this will grow).

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/sovanyio

Created a PR to fix the issue of conversion depending on the URL https://github.com/robincard/duolingo-simplified-to-traditional-chinese/pull/1

If anyone wants this now, they can directly install my mod using the dev tools: https://github.com/sovanyio/duolingo-simplified-to-traditional-chinese

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/RobinCard

It's all live now :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/RobinCard

ps your PR has been merged in and will be in the next release. Thanks!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MaryEllen246097

Wow, that is wonderful! This is so needed! It's hard to be expose to characters without meaning. I've been "cut and paste" into Google Search for the meaning of the characters. This is so needed! Thanks!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/AndreyKhaytin

Very cool but alas I prefer Opera)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/RobinCard

Opera is far too small a userbase for me to develop for, BUT, I have published the source code without copyright so if a developer who does like Opera wants an Opera plug-in/extension. It will be easy for them to convert and maintain.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/sharon680226

I would prefer the Chinese course to use Pinyin rather than characters, I only want conversational Mandarin, and not having to learn the characters would be so much easier.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/RobinCard

I don't know why this is downvoted. It is a good idea to be honest.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/S0R0USH

It's not a bad idea either even if it's not a good idea. It's useful idea nonetheless.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/AtIndo

Well, for me, it's the opposite, I don't really need the pinyin and want to learn more about the characters. Because I want to try read chinese's novel or even translate it.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MaryEllen246097

I love learning Chinese Characters on Duolingo. And, I understand and respect that Duolingo Chinese decided not to use Pinyin as a tool. And I understand that it was also a choice not to put meaning when presenting us with Chinese characters, so don't get me wrong, but i need the extra help that pesudo English, ie Pinyin provides me. And, I just found out that, Memrise's Paid Chinese Course uses Pinyin, as well as Characters, with the brush strokes and audio and video too, to teach Chinese. I don't think it's wrong or cheating to have a pseudo English extra tool to use to learn Chinese Characters - I just bought the paid Memrise Chinese Course for $29.99 for a year (I had gotten to Level 12 I think in their free Chinese lessons, so I jumped at the 50% off offer when it was presented to me as a reward for achieving Level 12 or was it 15, in any case) and guess what? It teaches a lot in Pinyin (unlike the free Memrise Chinese Course which does not quiz you in Pinyin nor give you videos). I was blown away that they actually quiz you for the Pinyin (as well as the characters) on the paid Memrise Chinese course! No I don't get a kickback from Memrise. And I am a true Duolingo user for life, a paying Duolingo plus user. But, Memrise Chinese always shows meaning with the Characters and audio and strokes - even with the free Memrise Chinese Lessons - that is why I started using the free Chinese Memrise course to begin with, to help me with my Duolingo Chinese. Just thought you might be interested in Memrise too since you want to learn with Pinyin. I only use Memrise Chinese, as a supplement to the Duolingo Chinese course!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JohannesMu12

They do it for the listening exercises, but not for the characters. Should be easy to implement that in the tip shown after the exercise. I always switched app into a translator app to understand the meaning. super annoying. Maybe memrise is better there, at the end learning a language takes many approaches, but still am going to stick to my plus membership, too. Never had so much consistency in learning languages.

Learn Chinese in just 5 minutes a day. For free.
