T and N for Plurals and Accusative 2

The T and N ends

If a bíró is in focus, we can get the following order, too:

A bíró keres ügyvédeket és talál színészeket talál.

which means something like ‘It is the judge who is looking for lawyers and finding actors.’

I'm guessing the first talál is a typo?

If someone comes along with an ability to make edits to the course, perhaps the highly unfortunate translation here can be addressed as a matter of priority.

As long as I'm pointing out typos, here's another from the T and N for the Verbs 2 Present Plural skill:

Hungarian has a few more pronouns that are you used to address someone in a formal context, just like French vous, Spanish usted and German Sie.

I was wrong! Please disregard everything I wrote before!!! Okay, this has really been bugging me, so I just asked my mom for a second opinion. She speaks Hungarian fluently (from birth) though she is not a grammer expert either. I read her both “A biró keres ugyvedeket és talál szinézeket” and “A bíro keres ugyvedeket es szineszeket talal” and she said they both sound fine to her! So there you have it. I was completely wrong, both sentences/word orders are correct. You were right originally, it is probably a typo in the course with talal being used twice in one sentence. I am so sorry!!! Please disregard everything I wrote earlier. Sorry!!!!! I will make sure to double check first in the future before attempting to respond to grammer questions. I have gone back and deleted all my previous comments so hopefully I haven’t confused too many people. I am also sorry that when I deleted my wrong comments, it also somehow deleted other peoples replies. I am sorry, I only meant to delete my own comments so that I would not confuse anyone, and I am sorry if I accidentally deleted anyone elses comment/response. I think you were right in your first guess, Piguy3, talal being used twice. It’s probably a typo. (A really terrible typo) I’m sorry!

It is the judge who is looking for lawyers and finding actors. = A bíró az, aki ügyvédeket keres, és színészeket talál.

Hi Peter. I agree with you. I was just wondering if you’ve had a chance to look at the tips and notes section to which piguy3 original question was refering? I have copied and pasted the relevant section below just case you haven’t. If you have a spare moment can you please take a look at it and let me know what you think. I wonder why they choose to translate it so strangely in the Tips and Notes? (Your translation is the correct one, to my ears) Did they make a mistake/typo or are they trying to illustrate a point? The whole section is confusing. If you a spare a moment please take a look and let me know what you think. Kiszonem szipen!

Copied and pasted directly from Tips and Notes:

Contrast and word order

As mentioned in the Tips & Notes for Accusatives 1, Hungarian word order is less free in sentences which express some contrast. The following sentence from this skill illustrates this:

The judge is looking for lawyers and finds actors.

Here, the subject is and remains judge, but there are two different verbs, is looking for and finds, as well as two different objects, lawyers and actors. Since there is a contrast between the two objects, not all word orders in Hungarian are accepted here. In fact, the objects are most naturally placed just before the verb:

A bíró ügyvédeket keres és színészeket talál.

If a bíró is in focus, we can get the following order, too:

A bíró keres ügyvédeket és talál színészeket talál.

which means something like ‘It is the judge who is looking for lawyers and finding actors.’

However, mixing the order of the two verbs and their objects not possible here.

Hi Silvia. First of all, unfortunately the Hungarian course was finished very slowly, it became very complicate and it is too boring.

I haven't looked for the original sentence, but if it is so, the usage of two 'talál' is a typo; 'A bíró keres ügyvédeket és talál színészeket talál.' One of them have to omitted: The correct sentence is: ' A bíró keres ügyvédeket és színészeket talál.' or 'A bíró keres ügyvédeket és talál színészeket.' 'A bíró az, aki ügyvédeket keres, és színészeket talál.' is also good.

Here are some references for the word order, if you not know them: http://www.hungarianreference.com/Misc_Grammar/syntax-sentences-word-order.aspx

Good learning! If I can help you in Hungary, you're welcome.

Yes. A bíró keres ügyvédeket és talál színészeket.

If you don't put focus on the bíró, then:

A bíró ügyvédeket keres és színészeket talál.

Ah, that would make sense with the last sentence of the Tips and Notes: "However, mixing the order of the two verbs and their objects not possible here."

So it was really the second "talál" that's the typo.

Interesting that a couple Hungarian native speakers seem to think that "A bíró keres ügyvédeket és színészeket talál" is actually fine. Maybe it varies by dialect, or there's the rule and then there's actual practice?
